What is Android Auto Coolwalk and How to Use It? Is it Built into the Car or Runs on Your Phone?

Google introduced a completely new experience with the Coolwalk interface for Android Auto in late 2022. So, what is Coolwalk, how does it work, and the most frequently asked question: Does it come from the car, or does it run on the phone? We explain everything in detail.
? What is Android Auto Coolwalk?Coolwalk is the next-generation user interface of Android Auto. Google developed this design to be more functional, modern, and multitasking-oriented.
? Key Features:

Split-screen support: Navigation, music, and messages on the same screen.

Dynamic layout: Automatic arrangement based on screen size.

Dock bar: Quick app switching.

Updated media controls: Easy access to apps like Spotify, YouTube Music.

Google Assistant integration: Smart suggestions and quick replies.

? How Does Coolwalk Work?Coolwalk runs on your phone but is displayed on your car screen.
⚙️ How the System Works:

Android Auto app runs on your Android phone.

You connect your phone to the car via USB or wirelessly.

The car screen shows the interface of the Android Auto app.

If your phone has the latest version, Coolwalk is activated automatically.

Important: Coolwalk does not run on the car’s operating system but through a connection with the phone. Updates go to the phone, not the car.
? Which Cars Support Coolwalk?Coolwalk works with all cars that support Android Auto, whether it’s factory-installed or an aftermarket multimedia unit. Examples include:

New generation displays from VW, Hyundai, Renault, Mercedes, Ford, etc.

3rd party displays from Pioneer, Kenwood, etc.

Note: No special hardware is required. If the screen supports Android Auto and your phone is updated, it works.
?️ How to Activate Coolwalk:

Update Android Auto on your phone (version 8.5+).

Go to Settings > Android Auto on your Android device.

Enable “Try the new Android Auto.”

When you connect your phone to the car, the Coolwalk interface activates automatically.
